IVF success rates and how to read them

Success rates depend heavily on age and on how they are counted. This page explains what the numbers mean and shows published figures by age.

Ask about your own chances

Your doctor will talk through your own chances at your consultation, based on your age, your test results and any earlier treatment. Please contact us to book one.

What a success rate can mean

Two clinics can report very different numbers for the same results, depending on what they count:

  • Positive pregnancy test: the highest and least useful figure, because not every positive test leads to a continuing pregnancy
  • Clinical pregnancy: a pregnancy sac seen on ultrasound
  • Live birth: a baby born, which is what most couples care about

It also matters what the figure is measured against: each cycle started, each egg collection or each embryo transfer. A rate per transfer leaves out cycles in which no embryo was available.

How age changes the chances

Age is the biggest single factor, because egg number and quality fall with age. As a guide, these are the most recent national figures published by the UK fertility regulator:

Woman's ageBirth rate per embryo transferred
18 to 3438%
All ages (average)30%
43 to 448%

These are not Ishwa IVF's results, and they do not predict yours. They are preliminary 2024 UK figures for IVF using a patient's own eggs, and outcomes differ between countries and populations. Source: HFEA, Fertility treatment 2024: trends and figures.

What affects your own chances

  • The woman's age and egg reserve (AMH and antral follicle count)
  • The cause and length of infertility
  • Sperm quality
  • The number and quality of embryos
  • The health of the uterus and lining
  • Earlier pregnancies and earlier treatment
  • General health, including weight, smoking and blood sugar

Questions to ask any clinic

  • Is this figure per cycle started, per egg collection or per embryo transfer?
  • Does it count positive tests, clinical pregnancies or live births?
  • What are your figures for a woman of my age?
  • Which period does it cover, and how many cycles were included?
  • Does it include donor eggs?

Be careful with any promise of a guaranteed pregnancy. No clinic can guarantee one.

Questions

What is the IVF success rate at Ishwa IVF?

Chances differ with age, test results and earlier treatment, so your doctor will explain your own chances at your consultation. Please contact us to book one.

Can any clinic guarantee a pregnancy with IVF?

No. IVF improves the chance of pregnancy for many couples, but no clinic can guarantee a result.

Why does age matter so much?

The number and quality of eggs fall with age, especially after the mid-thirties. This affects the chance that an embryo develops normally and leads to a birth.

Is a higher success rate always a better clinic?

Not by itself. A clinic treating more older women or more complex cases may show lower figures. Ask how the figure is counted and what it is for a woman of your age.

Do chances improve with more cycles?

The overall chance of having a baby often increases over more than one cycle, depending on age and the cause of infertility. Your doctor can advise you after reviewing each cycle.
