Overview
Blocked tubes usually cause no symptoms, so they are often found during fertility tests. Treatment depends on whether one or both tubes are affected and how badly.
Common causes
- Pelvic infections, including those that cause no symptoms at the time
- Endometriosis
- Previous pelvic or abdominal surgery
- A previous ectopic pregnancy
- Tuberculosis of the genital tract, which is important to rule out in India
How blocked tubes are diagnosed
- HSG (hysterosalpingogram)
An X-ray test in which dye is passed through the cervix to see whether it flows through the tubes. - Sono-HSG
A similar test using ultrasound instead of X-ray. - Laparoscopy
A keyhole procedure that shows the tubes directly, and can treat some problems at the same time.
Treatment options
- One tube open: natural conception or IUI may still work, depending on age and other factors
- Both tubes blocked: IVF is usually the most effective treatment, because fertilisation happens in the laboratory
- Hydrosalpinx (a blocked tube filled with fluid): removing or clipping the tube before IVF improves the chance of implantation
- Tubal surgery: suitable for selected women with mild, specific damage
Questions about blocked fallopian tubes
Can I get pregnant with one blocked tube?
Yes. If the other tube is healthy and you ovulate, natural pregnancy or IUI is possible, though it may take longer. Your age and other test results guide the plan.
Can blocked tubes be opened?
Sometimes, in mild cases, with laparoscopic or hysteroscopic procedures. For many women with badly damaged tubes, IVF gives a better chance of pregnancy.
Is the HSG test painful?
Most women feel period-like cramps for a few minutes. A painkiller taken beforehand helps.
What is a hydrosalpinx?
A blocked fallopian tube filled with fluid. The fluid can reduce the chance of an embryo implanting, so removing or clipping the tube is often advised before IVF.
