IVF explained

Test tube baby in Jaipur

"Test tube baby" is the everyday name for IVF. The baby does not grow in a test tube. An egg and sperm meet in the laboratory, and the embryo that forms is placed in the mother's uterus, where the pregnancy continues like any other.

Overview

The name dates from the first IVF births in the 1970s, and many families in India still use it. If you have been told you may need a test tube baby, this page explains what that means. For the full medical detail, see our page on IVF treatment in Jaipur.

How it works, step by step

  1. Tests and a plan
Both partners are tested, and your doctor explains the plan.
  2. Injections
Daily injections for about 10 to 12 days help several eggs to mature, with scans to check progress.
  3. Egg collection
The eggs are collected in a short procedure under light anaesthesia.
  4. In the laboratory
Eggs and sperm are brought together, and the embryos grow for 3 to 5 days.
  5. Embryo transfer
An embryo is placed in the uterus through a thin tube. This takes a few minutes and usually needs no anaesthesia.
  6. Pregnancy test
A blood test is done about two weeks later.

Who may need it

  • Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Couples where the sperm count or quality is very low
  • Women with a low egg reserve or endometriosis
  • Couples who have not conceived after IUI or other treatment
  • Unexplained infertility, when simpler treatment has not helped

Not every couple needs it. Many conceive with medicines or IUI, and your doctor will suggest the simplest treatment likely to work for you.

Myths that worry families

  • "The baby grows in a tube." No. Only the first few days happen in the laboratory. The pregnancy grows in the uterus.
  • "The baby will not be ours." A baby from your own eggs and sperm is genetically yours. Donor eggs or sperm are used only when needed, with your written consent.
  • "You can choose a boy or a girl." No. Choosing the sex of a baby is illegal in India, and we do not do it.
  • "It always works the first time." No. Some couples conceive in the first cycle and others need more, and no clinic can guarantee a pregnancy. See how to read IVF success rates.

What it costs

The cost depends on your plan, including the medicines you need and any added lab steps. See IVF cost in Jaipur for what a cycle includes, and to ask for an estimate.

Questions about test tube baby
